Institute of Cartography
ETH Zürich, Switzerland

The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich is the major technical university in Switzerland with high international reputation. In 80Days, ETHZ is represented by the Institute of Cartography. The institute developed a long tradition in topographic and thematic cartography, map design and atlas cartography (school atlases, national atlases). These domains are still considered the main fields of application, but adapted to new demands, media and technologies. E-learning and training activities are also areas where the institute is very active; in the last 5 years, state-of-the-art and leading know-how in e-learning applications mainly in relation to geographic information have been developed. Among others, research projects are “Atlas of Switzerland”, SWATI (Swiss World Atlas Interactive – the official Swiss school atlas), STATLAS (the European Statistical Atlas) , GEOWARN (geospatial warning systems) , ORCHESTRA , or HUMBOLDT.
